Northern Colorado Spotlight Presentation: Fort Collins’ Disposable Bag Ordinance

Presented by Holly Pummell - Senior Sustainability Specialist with the City of Fort Collins

The City of Fort Collins adopted a Disposable Bag Ordinance that goes into effect May 1, 2022. The ordinance states that large grocers in Fort Collins will no longer provide plastic grocery bags and will begin charging customers for each paper bag used. This presentation will highlight how this program is being rolled out in Fort Collins.

Bio of Speaker: Holly is a Michigan native who graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Economics and Management accompanied by two minors in Leadership in Integrated Learning and Environmental Studies and Sustainability. During her time at Michigan State University, she was a Sustainability Assistant for the Residential and Hospitality Services. She implemented and created programs relating to waste reduction and recycling, student engagement, and university/community partnerships. Before becoming a Senior Sustainability Specialist, Holly was a Program Assistant for the City. She worked on the Disposable Bag Ordinance, Community Recycling Ordinance, and the Barriers to Recycling project. As a senior sustainability specialist, Holly will be working extensively on the Disposable Bag Ordinance to cultivate relationships with community partners, distribute reusable bags to community members, coordinate communication planning, and follow the ordinance's implementation. She is excited to work on the Disposable Bag Ordinance and foster relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.  Holly enjoys the outdoors, reading, and spending time with her dog Addie!
